Commentaries on the Entire Bible
The Oberlin Evangelist (responsible for giving us most of Finney's sermons).1861-1881
From Spurgeon's preface: "The reader will please observe that the books most heartily recommended are printed in the largest type with the remarks in italics. Good, but more ordinary, works are in medium type, and the least desirable are in the smallest letter. Thus we hope the eye will be caught at once by volumes best worthy of attention."
Princeton Review: "SHORT NOTICES. Ezekiel and Daniel; with Notes, critical, explanatory, and practical, de signed for both Pastors and People. By Rev. Henry Cowles, D.D. New York, 1867. 12mo, pp. 472. This volume partakes of the same general character with that upon the Minor Prophets by the same author, which is already before the public. The exposition given is brief, clear, pertinent, and very satisfactory, though many details are omitted or cursorily passed over, which are discussed in more extensive works. It is just such a book as the majority of intelligent students of the Bible require, to lead them to a better comprehension of the writings of the prophets. The principles of interpretation are sound and Christian, as opposed to the narrowness of Jewish literalism and the shallowness of modern unbelief; and they are, in the main, soberly and judiciously applied. In rapidly turning over its pages, the only passage upon which we have fallen that is doctrinally objectionable, is the remarks on the valley of dry bones in Ezekiel xxxvii...."
Professor John Morgan recommends the entire 16 volume series of Cowles' Commentaries "as a work of special ability and excellence; among the very best contributions to the interpretation of the Word of God, enriched, but not overloaded or obscured by learning."
From Dr. Leonard Bacon, of Yale College. "There is, within my knowledge, no other work on the same portions of the Bible, combining so much of the results of accurate scholarship with so much common-sense and so much of a practical and devotional spirit."
From Rev Dr. S. Wolcott, of Cleveland, Ohio. "The author, who ranks as a scholar with the most eminent graduates of Yale College, has devoted years to the study of the Sacred Scriptures in the original tongues and the fruits of careful and independent research appear in this work. With sound scholarship the writer combines the unction of deep religious experience, an earnest love of the truth, with a remarkable freedom from all fanciful speculation, a candid judgment, and the faculty of expressing his thoughts clearly and forcibly."
From President E. B. Fairfield, of Hillsdale College. "I am very much pleased with your Commentary. It meets a want which has long been felt. For various reasons, the writings of the prophets have constituted a sealed book to a large part of the ministry as well as most of the common people. They are not sufficiently understood to make them appreciated. Your brief notes relieve them of all their want of interest to common readers. I think you have said just enough."
406. COWLES (HENRY, D.D.) The Psalms; with Notes. 8vo. New York, 1872. Worth about 5/-Always repays for consulting, though it does not contain much that is new, original, or profound. It might be reprinted in England, with the probability of a large sale.
722. COWLES (HENRY, D.D.) Isaiah, with Notes. z2mo. New York, D. Appleton & Co. 1869. S. 6/6. Cowles writes more popularly than Alexander, and, though he is not so profound an authority, we have read him with pleasure.
761, 779. COWLES (HENRY, D.D.) Ezekiel and Daniel; with Notes, Critical, Explanatory, and Practical. Thick cr. 8vo. New York, D. Appleton & Co. 1867. S. 6/6. In his own way this author is one of the most instructive of American writers; he is clear and definite, and leaves his meaning impressed upon the mind. His scholarship is respectable.
811. COWLES (HENRY, D.D.) The Minor Prophets, with Notes. Cr. 8vo. New York, D. Appleton & Co. 1867. S. 7/-"This work is designed for both pastor and people. It embodies the results of much research, and elucidates the text of sacred Scripture with admirable force and simplicity."—New York Christian Intelligence [As quoted elsewhere: "The Christian Intelligencer, N. Y. 'These works are designed for both pastor and people. They embody the results of much research, and elucidate the text of sacred Scripture with admirable force and simplicity. The learned professor, having devoted many years to the close and devout study of the Bible, seems to have become thoroughly furnished with all needful materials to produce a useful and trustworthy commentary.'"].
